Hangout: Listen to Music Together, in Sync

Zene Hangout lets friends listen to music together in sync

How to Listen Together With Zene Hangout

Hangout lets you listen to music together with friends, in sync. You put on a song, a podcast, a video or a radio station, and everyone in the room hears it at the same moment, wherever they are. There's a chat beside it, and anyone in the room can pick what plays next.

The short version

Music View → Hangout icon in the top header → Start → Share the link.

Free Hangouts hold 2 people for 1 hour a day. Premium holds up to 40 people with no daily limit. Anyone in the room can play, pause or change what's on.

What a Hangout is

Most "listen together" features are a shared playlist that everyone plays on their own. A Hangout is different: it's one room with one player. When someone presses play, it plays for everyone. When someone skips ahead, everyone skips ahead.

It works with everything Zene plays:

Kind Example
Music An album you want a friend to hear properly.
Podcast An episode you both want to argue about.
Video A music video or live set, watched together.
Radio A live station as background to a long call.

How to start a Hangout

  1. Open Music View in Zene.
  2. Tap the Hangout icon in the top header.
  3. Tap Start. Your room opens as Your Hangout.
  4. Tap Share link to send it, or Copy code to paste the code anywhere.
  5. Put something on. Until someone does, the room says "Nothing playing yet — put something on."

Friends can open your link, or type the code, and tap Go in.

What happens inside the room

  • Everyone hears the same moment. That's the whole point.
  • Anyone can control it. Anyone in the room can change the song, play or pause. There's no waiting for the host.
  • The chat shows what happened. Messages sit next to events such as "Maya played …", "Sam paused the music" or "Alex joined the Hangout", so a late arrival can see what they missed.
  • You can minimise it. Keep browsing Zene while you stay in the room, and the music keeps following it.

Free vs Premium

Feature Free Premium
People in the room 2 Up to 40
Time in Hangouts 1 hour a day No daily limit
The daily hour resets Midnight UTC —

When a free listener's hour runs out, they step out of the room and the chat says so. The room carries on for everyone else.

Two people is plenty for a long-distance evening with one person. For a group chat, a movie night or a road trip, Premium makes room for the whole crew.

Leaving and coming back

Tap Leave the Hangout. The music stops following the room for you, but you can hop back in from Recent Hangouts at any time in the next 24 hours, while the room is still going.

A Hangout code works for a day, so the Recent list clears itself.

Good to know

  • Each person needs Zene. Everyone listens on their own phone, so everyone needs the app or myzene.com, and a connection.
  • Each person uses their own data. Audio uses roughly the same data as normal listening; video uses much more. See post 52 for the numbers.
  • It's not a broadcast. A Hangout is for people you invite with the link or code.
